Drive Camellia Boulevard this week and you'll see the sign now bolted to the building between Verot School Road and Kaliste Saloom Road: Trader Joe's, opening September 17. For a store Lafayette spent years assuming would never actually show up, watching the signage go up feels almost anticlimactic. It shouldn't. That grocery store isn't an isolated event. It's the last stop on a corridor that has been quietly reshaping itself around Audubon Plantation and Audubon Parc since January.
What's Actually Landing on the 17th
The new store sits at 1710 Camellia Boulevard, a roughly 9,200-square-foot location that will be Lafayette's first Trader Joe's and Louisiana's sixth. Store Captain Johnny Veillon and the crew, more than sixty of them hired locally for this opening, will run the doors starting at 8 a.m. The chain's Neighborhood Shares Program means unsold product goes to local nonprofits every day the store is open, not just on donation drives.
For a neighborhood that has watched this stretch of Camellia sit as a construction zone since site work started in late 2025, that's a real change in what "grocery run" means. Until now, the nearest Trader Joe's locations sat in Baton Rouge and Metairie, both more than an hour away. As of September 17, it's a few minutes down Camellia.
The Year That Got Us Here
What makes this month different from a single store opening is that it's the fourth domino, not the first. The corridor bordering Audubon Plantation has been adding pieces all year, in a sequence worth actually tracing:
- January 12 — Bistrology Brunch & Coffee opened at 3905 Ambassador Caffery Parkway, in the space that used to be a Chili's. Owner Ruben Chavez, who also runs several El Paso Mexican Grill locations in the region, brought the Florida-based chain's Latin-fusion brunch concept to Louisiana for the first time. Chilaquiles, breakfast arepas, stuffed croissants, and a jungle-heavy interior that reads more Miami than south Lafayette.
- That spring — Empire Wingz opened at 1521 Ambassador Caffery, in a former Subway. It's founder Vic Smith's eighth location and his first outside the Baton Rouge market he built the brand in.
- March, with a grand opening April 11 — A full-size, standalone Dunkin' opened at 3546 Ambassador Caffery in the Tuscany Square shopping center near Acadiana Mall. Before this, the only other Dunkin' in the parish was an express counter inside a gas station in Milton.
- September 17 — Trader Joe's opens on Camellia.
None of those four openings happened in isolation. Each one landed on a corridor that runs directly past Audubon Plantation, and each one made the next feel less speculative. By the time Trader Joe's signage went up, this wasn't a neighborhood wondering if change was coming. It was a neighborhood watching the last confirmed piece of something already in motion.
"I wanted to bring the concept to Louisiana," Chavez told The Advocate when Bistrology was still under construction.
That's a small quote, but it's worth sitting with. Chavez wasn't opening a franchise because Lafayette asked for one. He picked this stretch of Ambassador Caffery on a bet, and the bet paid off well enough that a second Bistrology location is now planned for Chemin Metairie Parkway in Youngsville, though no date has been set.
What Used To Mean A Drive

It's worth being honest about the parts of this corridor still under construction, because not everything on Camellia arrived on the same clock. Red River Bancshares is building a new full-service banking center at 1800 Camellia Boulevard, immediately next to the Trader Joe's site. It will be the company's second Lafayette location and its 29th in Louisiana, and it's targeting a first-quarter 2027 opening, not this fall. A beer garden is also planned for the same stretch, though no firm timeline has surfaced for it yet.
That gap matters for how you read this fall. The corridor isn't finished changing. It's mid-change, with one large, confirmed piece landing in less than a week and a couple of smaller pieces still a year or more out. If you're the kind of neighbor who tracks these things, that means there's a reasonable chance this same stretch of Camellia looks different again by the time next year's Trader Joe's anniversary sale rolls around.
Why This Matters More Than "New Store Opens"
The generic version of this story is easy to write: new grocery store, new brunch spot, new wings, new coffee. That's the version every other outlet already ran. The part worth understanding if you actually live off Kaliste Saloom or inside Audubon Parc is the sequencing. Four separate businesses, four separate corporate decisions, all landed on the same two-mile stretch inside nine months, each one making the corridor a slightly safer bet for the next.
That's not luck. Retail and restaurant groups watch foot traffic and rooftops before they commit to a lease, and a corridor that adds a buzzy brunch spot in January and holds onto that traffic through March tends to look more attractive to a grocery chain deciding where its first Louisiana store goes. Whether that's exactly how Trader Joe's landed on Camellia specifically, no one outside the company has said. But the pattern, four openings compounding on each other in under a year, is the more interesting story than any single ribbon cutting.
